Culturally sensitive education, treatment and resources

BlackTherapyandWellness.com was created in 2022 to serve as a central forum to obtain information about the mental health experience and treatment of black people.  Its mission is to provide an informative and culturally sensitive database relevant to the African American experience to encourage and provide the evidence for mental health treatment and to improve the lives of all African Americans.  The information provided here is presented to be informative and all attempts will be made to improve the accurateness of its contents.

BlackTherapyandWellness.com strives to provide inclusive information for treatment interventions for all Black individuals and welcomes all aspects of diversity within Black lives (i.e., age, sexuality, sexual orientation, Socioeconomic Status, religion).  If you view the site and do not see information relevant to your particular experience, please visit again in the future.  The site will be continually updated to reflect new topics and resources.

Black Psychology focuses on the world view of people of African descent. Compared to a Eurocentric world view, an African centered worldview focuses on harmonious interactions, a collectivistic view, spirituality, history, pacifism, values, honesty and truth.

“The attempt to define a black aesthetic based on the black experience, to find a particular black idiom both for artistic and political purposes, and to reform historical interpretation so that the black will be liberated from the subordinate position assigned him in most Western historical accounts—these are all aspects of the search or research for collective identity and, derivatively, for distinctive personality.”

—Raymond Betts (1971, p. 1), Introduction, The Ideology of Blackness

The Black community has experienced multiple types of racism and trauma that has impacted our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Enduring a history of interpersonal and systemic racism has resulted in detrimental consequences on our personal, educational, and professional lives. Black Therapy and Wellness serves as a forum to discuss these factors that influence us but to also provide a platform for education and an action plan to reverse the negative impacts of racism and racial trauma.
